Shanganagh Castle
Project type
Energy Consultancy
Date
2025
Location
Dublin
Shanganagh Castle in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, is set to be Ireland’s largest Passive House certified public housing development, consisting of 550 residential units across 449,068 ft². Designed by ABK Architects, the project is focused on achieving high energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, targeting the stringent Passive House standards.
MosArt, serving as the Passive House consultant, is responsible for energy modelling, thermal bridge assessment, and DEAP evaluation to ensure the project meets Passive House performance criteria. The development faces several challenges, including managing the scale of 11 building blocks, executing the project under a Design Build contract, devising a suitable ventilation strategy with accessible filter changing for social housing, preventing summer overheating in conjunction with district heating systems, and designing brick facades with external cavities outside the insulated envelope.
With completion anticipated in 2025, Shanganagh Castle will serve as a landmark for sustainable public housing in Ireland, demonstrating the potential of large-scale Passive House projects in urban settings.
